Stories from the Middle East Region

Nada Debs Is...a fusion of the Middle and Far East

Nada Debs is one of the most well respected names in the regional design scene. Raised in Japan and a longterm resident of the UK and USA, Debs returned to Beirut after a 40-year hiatus to launch her critically acclaimed eponymous homes goods brand.

Japan
“Japan is more than just a mindset, I grew up there. I think and analyze things in a Japanese way: ‘the non part.’ I am an introverted thinker -  and am usually very quiet until I can speak. The Japanese think more about community than self; I think we could all learn from that.”

Beirut
“Subconsciously I want to belong to a community, but I definitely have a love/hate relationship with Beirut. All of my siblings live abroad and have no connection whatsoever to the city, unlike me.”

Designer
“I have a very strong work ethic. I am inspired by fashion magazines, especially the ads, I am very interested in marketing and branding. As a designer, I want to stand out, and make something different.”

Spiritual
“I was fighting spirituality but now I embrace it. It’s at the core of what I do. My ultimate goal is to reach a stage where everything is aligned. I am not there yet, but it’s a process and I am on the way.”

Wise
“I question myself all day. I believe in the power of people, networking and collaborations. Design objects and furniture are stepping stones to a bigger awareness of subtle things.”

Inspired
“Japan, without a doubt, inspires me the most. I try to visit at least once a year to recharge. I would like to explore the rest of Asia as well. Paris, London, and Milan bore me now.”

Perceptive
“Constantly observing affects what I design.”

Mother
“I have two children and a huge work family!”

Dog owner
“I have a dog named 50, I got him for my 50th birthday. He is my connection to reality and keeps me grounded. I can easily forget the time when I work!”

Granddaughter
“My Grandma pushed me to take my career seriously and figure out what would make me happy. She is my backbone and still gives me the best advice.”

Loyal
“I am very loyal to my employees and they are loyal to me. We are one big family. I have dinner at my woodworker’s home all the time, his wife makes a great beef stroganoff.”

People Lover
“I like to be inspired, curious, and meet people.  I ask a lot of questions and I go out a lot. I meet people almost every evening.”

Swimmer
“I have been swimming since I was 6 years old. Swimming is my meditation and underwater is where I design. I also enjoy running, it liberates me.”

Morning Person
“I wake up early between 5:30am and 6am, my mind is clearest in the morning.”

Independent
“I am doing it on my own. We should feel pride in ourselves.”
