Stories from the Middle East Region

Design Days Dubai Edit

Nada Debs, Beirut Lebanon

Naqsh Design House, Amman Jordan

Amman-based Naqsh presented "Thawrat Turath", a collaborative project by designers and sisters, Nisreen and Nermeen Abudail, exploring Palestinian embroidery traditions carved into wood with copper accents.  The result was a moving and spiritual presentation of a documented past and vision of the future through innovative craftsmanship.  Words don't do the installation justice, so please see the photos!

Oru Cabinet Aljoud Lootah

Aljoud Lootah, Dubai UAE

Widely photographed during the fair, the multidisciplinary designer's “The Oru Series,” struck a chord with fair goers.  Aljoud used origami principles to build a focused collection of customizable furniture and lighting pieces in wood and felt.

Shamsa Alabbar, Alabbar Design, Dubai UAE

We're in love with young Emirati jewelry designer, Shamsa Alabbar, who debuted four new collections at Design Days Dubai. Alabbar's jewelry is based on Arabic typography, but employs a unique approach to create abstracted, minimalist, and linear forms in rose gold.  Fresh and design forward.  Watch this space for more from Shamsa Alabbar!

House of Today, Beirut Lebanon

Founded in 2012, House of Today (HoT) is a non-profit platform to support Lebanese designers reach an international audience.  The founder, Cherine Magrabi Tayeb, created a serene space at Design Days to showcase an impressive list of small and large objects by many designers following the success of her show in Beirut earlier in the year.  Here are a couple of our favorites.

Carwan,  Beirut Dubai Milan

Carwan: consistently presenting new content through collaborative commissions.  This year they presented Posa Project by Italian designer Massimo Faion, a series of falcon stands.  Bringing design sensibility and luxury to the regional sporting world of falconry, Carwan demonstrates yet again their ability to bring compelling new perspectives to fruition. For more of Carwan see, the Secret Collection by Fabrica for Carwan….

Nada Debs, Beirut Lebanon

Doyen of zen, craft and production, Nada's booth at Design Days Dubai served not only as a survey of her ten year anniversary, but as a respite for motivation and advice for Letternoon.  Watch this space for Nada Debs wisdom and products!
